| CAITHNESS 27 - CRAIG DUNAIN 12 by Iain Grant |
| Wed 28th Sep 2005 |
Caithness Seconds made it three straight wins following their 27-12 win over Craig Dunain at Millbank on Saturday.
After a storming first half, they were pegged back by the Inverness visitors only to regroup and clinch their second win in the Highland District League.
Both teams had encouraging spurts early on but the second phase ball was too slow to stretch the rival defences.
The Yellows drew first blood when the forwards created an excellent platform to give right winger Graeme Ross space out wide to outflank his counterpart to score in the corner.
A similar raid shortly afterwards brought the same result with the flying fireman sent over for his second.
Caithness increased their advantage with a fine solo effort from Ryan Macintosh who picked up from the back of a ruck and evaded a posse of opponents to score at the posts.
Mathew Wicks's conversion gave the Yellows a useful 17-0 half-time advantage.
The visitors proceeded to eat into the lead as they troubled their hosts with some surging runs from their backs and driving mauls from the forwards.
That provided a stern test for the Caithness defence which leaked two tries to reduce their lead to 17-12.
The damage could have been more but for handling errors by the visitors.
A few good probes by Caithness during this period were undone by unforced errors and the needless concession of penalties which handed the advantage back to Craig.
Caithness hit back with an excellent of continuity play ending with Ross rounding a couple of players to run in his third try of the day.
This move was a fine example of the support play and sharp passing between forwards and backs, which has improved significantly with the increase in the number of players training.
The interplay between forwards and backs was evident in a lot of the surges deep into the Craig half and was a good plus point in the performance.
The final score followed a good spell of pressure late on which ended with Neil Campbell going over the line for his first try of the season.
Tomorrow, the Seconds travel to Orkney to play West Mainland.
