| TESTING ENCOUNTER AS GREENS FACE HIGHLAND by Iain Grant |
| Fri 5th Dec 2008 |
Kilmarnock were the big losers in the Scottish club rugby world on Saturday after making a fruitless overnight foray to Caithness.
An early-morning inspection of the frost-bound Millbank pitch did not require much deliberation before the plug was pulled on the Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division 2 tie.
The Ayrshire party, who had travelled to Thurso on Friday evening, learned of the bad news at their base in the Royal Hotel and duly set off on the marathon home trek.
Greens' coach Jim MacMillan said: "It was hard on the Kilmarnock boys but we had no option but to call the game off as the pitch was rock hard. There was no way we could have played the game."
Caithness are hoping the freeze-up will relent to allow their clash away to Highland to go ahead tomorrow.
Both north sides have been hovering just above the relegation zone and each requires a couple of wins if they are to pull themselves into the upper half of the table.
MacMillan is boosted by the return of flanker Stevie Campbell who is back home after a spell working in the south of England.
Centre/winger James Sinclair is also back from the rigs while Halde Pottinger's return will boost the options in the front row.
On the debit side, illness has sidelined Sinclair Dunnett while scrum-half Kris Hamilton may have to miss out because of a Scotland under-19 training camp.
Stand-off is a problem position with the versatile Blair McIntosh looking the most likely to fill the position.
MacMillan is keen to repeat the home victory over Highland but knows it will be tough.
He said: "Highland have had an up-and-down season but played well in going down 27-0 away to Whitecraigs on Saturday while we were idle.
"Starting tomorrow, we're looking to secure another 10 points which I think would make our position safe."
Linlithgow kept the pressure on leaders Whitecraigs on Saturday with a 39-7 home win over bottom side Hillfoots.
Hawick YM stay third though with a 12-0 win over Newton Stewart but their dearth of bonus points could deny them one of the promotion spots.
Glasgow Accies kept up their slim hopes of getting among the three pace-setters with a 38-25 victory over Greenock Wanderers at New Anniesland.
Forrester's losing run continued when they went down 39-8 at Stewartry.
