| CAITHNESS 57 - 7 CAITHNESS EXILES/STUDENTS by Iain Grant |
| Mon 5th Jan 2009 |
Caithness extended their run of wins on Saturday in the traditional festive fixture at Millbank.
Despite clashes with the Old Firm joust at Ibrox and the North Caley derby at the Dammies, the appeal of the Sinclair Cadzow Memorial Cup attracted a decent crowd.
The Exiles were hit by a clutch of eleventh hour call-offs, which left them exposed in crucial areas.
The Greens fully exploited the weak links as they ran in nine tries in what was a useful work-out prior to their upcoming Scottish Cup-tie versus Dundee High School FPs.
The final scoreline was rough justice on the Exiles who for long spells competed grittily and saw several spells of intense pressure on the opposition line go unrewarded.
They were punished on three occasions in the first half for misfiring attacks which led to turnovers and the concession of long-range, runaway tries.
A stolen line-out and rolling maul from the Yellows five metre line led to the first score on five minutes with centre Danny Gordon grounding the ball under a pile of bodies.
Minutes later, Gordon provided the accelerant in the first of the long-distance tries, scored by right wing Kris Gove.
Gordon and Evan Sutherland added further counters as the Exiles paid the price for coughing up possession.
Impressive breaks Donald Sangster and skipper Andy Knight helped the Exiles station in the opposition 22 when a series of penalties looked certain to lead to a reply.
But once again, the Greens were let out of jail and, with the opposition back three posted missing, a length-of-the-field sortie ended with a run-in for left wing Gordie Macleod.
Centre Norman Foubister paved the way for Gordon’s hat-trick try just before half-time.
The Exiles’ cause was looking holed well below the water-line when centre Hamish Coghill was sent over to make it 41-0 within five minutes of the turnaround.
But their dogged resistance, allied to some sloppy play by the Greens, kept the scoreboard stationary until a late flurry of action.
Sutherland grabbed his second try of the day before Knight deservedly got his side off the mark after he burrowed over from close in.
Gary Mackay landed 12 points with the boot.
The trophy was handed over to stand-in skipper Graham Fryer by Eilidh Cadzow, who had travelled up with her husband Donald from their home in Tain.
The couple presented the cup in memory of their son Sinclair who lost his life after falling overboard from a ferry when travelling over from Stranraer for Scotland’s international in Ireland in January 1996.
Saturday’s was the 13th match in the series.

*Caithness have now their sights set on their Scottish Hydro Electric fourth round tie at home to Dundee High School FPs on January 10.
The city side, who currently top Premiership Two, will start as firm favourites in the first tussle between the sides.
But the Greens will be looking to use the Millbank factor to unsettle their opponents.
