SCOTTISH CALL UP FOR KRIS  by Iain Grant
Fri 30th Jan 2009
Young Caithness rugby player Kris Hamilton has been selected for Scotland’s under-19 training squad.

The scrum-half is the only player from the Highlands in the 34-strong group picked to prepare for two internationals.

The Dounreay apprentice progressed through the club’s youth ranks and played for the Caledonia side which won the inter-district youth title.

An apprentice at Dounreay, the former Wick High pupil has this year been deployed at both scrum-half and stand-off for the Greens.

He is in the squad which will have two training camps ahead of the internationals at home to Italy and away to France.

Head coach Colin Robertson said Hamilton is one of those chosen who was not involved with the under-18s last year.

He said: “We do not close the door on young players.

“There is a good mix of players in the training squad and we’ve tried to be quite open.

“There are guys like Kris Hamilton. He has been rewarded because we couldn’t leave him out as he has been playing so well.

“He is a nippy scrum half; he is sharp and quick with a good work ethic.”

The squad is expected to form the core of the contingent to contest next year’s under-20 Six Nations tournament.

* Caithness Seconds make a belated season’s debut tomorrow when they play Orkney Seconds at Millbank in the first leg of the Lyall Cup. Kick-off is at 12.30.
