| GREENS TARGET FIFTH SPOT by Iain Grant |
| Fri 13th Feb 2009 |
Caithness coach Jim MacMillan is challenging his side to maintain their fifth place ranking in the Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division 2.
Achieving the goal will be tough, especially as four of the Greens’ remaining six matches are against sides above them.
Speaking during a fortnight break in what has been a tough campaign, MacMillan called on his squad to dig on their reserves to ensure they stay in the top half of the table.
He said: “It’s probably unrealistic to think we could catch (Glasgow) Accies in fourth but if we finished fifth, we’d probably have done as well as we could.”
Any ambition to feature in the promotion race has been hamstrung by threadbare squads which have contested their away matches.
MacMillan said: “The one thing I hope the young guys are seeing is that it wouldn’t take a hell of a lot to put us in contention for promotion.
“If we had a few more guys prepared to travel, we’d be there or thereabouts.”
The coach is delighted by scrum-half Kris Hamilton’s inclusion in the 34-strong training squad of Scotland’s under-19s.
“It’s great to see him getting the recognition,” said MacMillan.
“He fully deserves it, not just for his ability but for the way he trains, the way he looks after himself and the way he conducts himself.
“It gives other young players a great boost and they can see what they’ve got to do to get to the level he’s at.”
A combination of a frosty pitch and poor driving conditions on the A9 led to the postponement of the Greens’ scheduled league match at home to Linlithgow on Saturday.
With tomorrow a league-free day, their next outing is a week tomorrow at home to NLD1 side Annan in the first round of the SHE Shield.
* In the only NLD2 match to survive Saturday’s freeze-up, Newton Stewart continued their drive away from the league basement with a 12-3 win over Stewartry.
