ROSS SUTHERLAND 26 - YELLOWS 24  by Iain Grant
Tue 11th Oct 2005
Caithness Seconds were just edged out 26-24 on Saturday on their trip to Invergordon to play Ross Sutherland's 1sts.

The 13-a-side match swung one way and then the other before a late converted try clinched it for the hosts.

The Yellows were under pressure for the opening ten minutes but broke out to open the scoring after a jinking run from scrum-half James Moodie.

The lead was soon doubled when a good spell of continuity play gave winger Graeme Ross a run-in.

The NLD5 Caley outfit then stepped up a gear and started to stretch the Caithness defence to score two converted tries to lead 14-10 at half time.

In the scrums, Caithness competed very well and often got a good shove on.

Line-outs for both sides were not very productive with too many home throw-ins going off line and too many visiting ones ending up in opposition hands.

The game had some very scrappy spells with a surfeit of penalties and other stoppages breaking up the game.

The Caithness cause was hampered by failing to release the ball sooner to their backs from the good field positions they created.

Early in the second half, a penalty to the right of the opposition posts on their 10 metre line saw the benefit of quick ball with some good interplay between backs and forwards resulting in Moodie's second try of the day.

This cancelled out Ross's third try to reduce their lead to 19-17.

A Caithness penalty was the launch-pad of another raid which ended with centre Iain Boyd coming in at a very good angle to carve a mazy run to touch down under the posts.

Stuart Johnson's second conversion put the Yellows 24-19 ahead.

The hosts however tied the score with a try five minutes from the end with the extra points clinching their victory.

The Caithness man-of-the-match was Moodie who not only tidied up well at the base of the scrum but scored two tries and was always involved at the breakdown.

Other players to impress were number eight Derek Bain, for his strength and work-rate; Ross, who caused his opposite number no end of trouble; and Donald Buchanan for stepping in at hooker and taking a couple of strikes against the head.

A narrow defeat was a decent result given that a lot of people were playing out of position and some of the newcomers had not a lot of game time or experience.

Caithness: J. Malcolm (cpt), D. Buchanan, D. Saunders, S. McIntosh, M. Leonard, D. Bain, J. Moodie, S. Johnston, B. Morris, K. Mackenzie, I. Boyd, G. Ross, D. Gunn, J. Mackenzie.
