| JORDANHILL 0 - CAITHNESS 123 by Iain Grant |
| Wed 12th Oct 2005 |
The early rounds of the BT Cup regularly produce a glut of unsavoury mismatches which result in runaway wins of juggernaut proportions.
Jordanhill were unfortunate enough to slump to the biggest margin of defeat of the 48 ties played on Saturday.
Their nemesis was a Caithness side whose haul of 19 tries reflected the massive advantage they had in experience, class, fitness and individual and unit skills.
The Greens went about their business in a clinical, efficient way, which was entirely appropriate on the main pitch at Hughenden, the home of Glasgow Warriors.
Coach Colin Sangster was happy his men sought to stick to their game-plan and did not resort to the tiresome individual show-boating which so often can disfigure such no-contests.
Jordanhill comprised a motley bunch of students and others who manfully never gave up but who from the outset knew they were on to a hiding to nothing.
At the same time as Scottish football's World Cup dream died on the other side of the River Clyde, the Greens were beginning to savour the prospect of another good run in the cup.
The size of the win was 19 points short of the club's record score -- a 132-0 mauling of Banff in 2003.
It is, needless to say, their record tally away from home while stand-off Michael Henderson set a new individual points record of 33 -- from 14 conversions and a try.
A powerful start saw the Greens pound the opposition try-line with a break by prop John Foubister being carried on by skipper Andy Morris and touched down by number eight Andrew Sangster.
A neat step by Henderson saw him over for the second before centre Duncan Sangster purred through an inviting gap in a fractured defence.
Duncan Sangster was to strike twice more before half-time -- the second an astonishing effort from near the half-way line in which he weaved his way through the heart of the opposition pack before eluding or outrunning a clutch of backs.
A lung-busting run-in from Steven Campbell and a close-in ram raid from Foubister kept the score-board ticking along before prop Jim MacMillan sparked another try when his early pass stretched the defence to allow full-back Richard Mackay to send in James 'Pop' Sinclair.
Centre William Mill then stretched his legs to cross to give his side a 59-0 interval advantage.
Jordanhill did enjoy a decent five minute spell in the third quarter when a series of penalties conceded by the Greens gave Jamie MacAllister a shot at goals, which he miscued.
It was to prove an oasis in the desert for the hard-pressed Glasgow District side, which is part of the Hillhead Jordanhill club.
The second half was to provide just one chink of light right at the death when MacAllister was short with an ambitious penalty effort.
Until then, their skipper was forced to display a commendable range of motivation tactics at regular team gatherings under the posts.
James 'Pop' Sinclair's second try within a minute of the restart was the best of the afternoon, the winger touching down wide out right after a thrilling
