| GREENS MADE TO WORK FOR THEIR WIN IN FRIENDLY by Iain Grant |
| Fri 21st Aug 2009 |
Caithness got a more then useful run-out in their first outing of the season at home to Orkney on Saturday.
The Greens were fully extended in a friendly against a more-than-useful island side before winning 31-20.
Colin Sangster, back for a second term as Caithness coach, was happy to give his opponents credit for their diplay.
He said: “They reckon they have got the best squad for a few years and I can see why.
“They made it difficult for us and that is what we needed -- we did not want an easy game.”
He added: “There were promising signs of us doing what we have been working on in training but our match fitness and match awareness were badly lacking. Our defensive lines were poor and we were not good enough in the contact area.
“It was a typical first game of the season.”
The Greens continue their preparations tomorrow with a friendly in Invergordon away to Ross Sutherland.
* Caithness scrum-half Kris Hamilton turned out for Edinburgh Gunners in their first competitive outing of the season away to Watsonians last Thursday.
The scrum-half, who won two caps for Scotland under-19s last year, was one of seven members of the national academy involved in the match at Myreside.
Hamilton played the last half-hour in the match which the pro side won 49-7.
