| GREENS 'KEEN TO DO WELL' by Iain Grant |
| Fri 28th Aug 2009 |
Caithness tomorrow embark on another SHE National League crusade, involving marathon fortnightly treks and a demanding twice weekly training regime.
Starting with an away day versus Hawick YM, the Greens have a particularly tough start to the season in terms of mileage.
Their next two trips are even farther with engagements in Newton Stewart and Castle Douglas – the home of Stewartry.
Coach Colin Sangster, back for his second stint in charge of the side, is eagerly looking forward to the club’s fourth season in NLD2.
“There’s been a real buzz abut the guys in training and in Saturday’s friendly in Invergordon. They’ve’ been working hard and are keen to do well.”
The coach took plenty of positives from their 57-10 win versus Ross Sutherland, who were last season promoted to Caledonian League Division 1.
He said: “In patches, we played some excellent rugby and it was good that the guys worked out how to play against them.
“The use of our back three in attack and improving our kicking game were things we talked about beforehand and I thought we did well in both these aspects.
“We also scored a couple of belters of tries from second phase play, which we had been working on in training.”
The area he believes the squad needs to work hard to improve is the contact-point in order to speed up recycling of the ball.
Sangster is targeting a top half finish and makes clear the object tomorrow will be to start their campaign with a victory.
Flanker Stevie Campbell misses out as he returning from holiday abroad while hooker Hamish Coghill, prop Ranald Pottinger are both injured and winger James ‘Pop’ Sinclair is offshore.
