| IN-CONTROL GREENS IN UPBEAT MOOD AFTER WIN |
| Fri 18th Sep 2009 |
The Greens prepare to entertain Glasgow Accies tomorrow in upbeat mood after a seven-tries-to-two victory on the road.
They made light of the longest joust involving sides on the Scottish mainland to secure a five-pointer which takes them to joint second in the Scottish Hydro National League Division 2.
The only disappointment among some in the travelling party was that they had not finished off more of the glut of scoring opportunities that came their way.
A firm pitch and a fine day at Bladnoch in deepest Galloway suited the open, expansive game favoured by the Greens.
They had failed to exploit a couple of early promising counters before they found themselves a try behind. The Caithness midfield fell for a dummy switch executed off a line-out by stand-off Neil Armstrong.
He then broke several tackles on his way over for a try, which he himself converted.
The visitors were soon level after centre James Paterson -- a constant threat with his pace and running lines – went over after a pre-planned move.
Number eight Evan Sutherland was then sent over from close range.
Gary MacKay converted both before home full-back James Murray romped over for an unconverted try to cut the Greens’ lead to two points.
Caithness wing Danny Gordon crossed soon after the break with Newton Stewart responding with a penalty.
The Greens went on to monopolise possession and run in 24 unanswered points.
The bonus point try came from fly-half Blair McIntosh after he looped Paterson before eluding the cover defence.
A clean break from Paterson took him over for his second while a mazy counter-attack from Gordon was carried on by Gordie Macleod and finished off by Sutherland.
Sutherland got his hat-trick of touchdowns before the end with Mackay adding another four points from the boot.
The handsome victory and the manner of its achievement pleased Greens coach Colin Sangster.
He said: “We created some good scoring opportunities early on which we were not able to take.
“Once we generated a bit of pace to our game and moved through the phases, we played pretty well. I thought we performed particularly well in the second half.”
The coach was happy with the control exerted by his pack in the setpiece.
“Our scrum took a bit of time to get going but we ended up driving them all the other place and we won all our own line-outs as well as taking three on four of their ball," he said.
“We dominated the setpiece and that gave us the platform to play off.”
Sangster added: “We’re not the finished article by any manner of means but there are signs that we’re moving forward every week.
“It’s early days but it would be nice to get a bit of momentum by winning a few games in a row.”
McIntosh and Paterson should be fit to face Accies tomorrow despite sustaining a broken finger and a suspected broken nose respectively last Saturday.
The options in the backs are augmented by the return of Norman Foubister and Graham Fryer. John Miller is also available again and there are a number of others back training who are vying for a place in the squad.
The match has a 2 p.m. kick-off.
Newton Stewart – J. Murray, J. McWhirter, G. MacMillan, I. Russell, A. Gibson, N. Armstrong, G. Armstrong, S. McWhirter, M. Wallace, G. MacDonald, M. Adams, R. Vance, J. Wallace, D. Skimming, S. Williams Replacements (both used) – M. Plunket and R. Fisken.
