| GREENS HOPE TO TURN TABLES ON LASSWADE by Iain Grant |
| Fri 22nd Jan 2010 |
Caithness are champing at the bit to resume active combat tomorrow after enduring five blank Saturdays.
With the Millbank pitch having recovered from the prolonged freeze-up, it is set to stage the first visit to the far north of Lasswade.
Like the Greens, the Midlothian outfit have been starved of live action and have been trying as best they can to keep in shape.
Lasswade are chasing a second successive promotion and are the only side to have downed the colours of Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division 2 runaway leaders Greenock Wanderers.
Caithness succumbed 46-12 in the earlier league game at Bonnyrigg.
An inexperienced side trailed by just six points at the break but their hopes evaporated after they conceded three tries in a fatal five minute spell after the interval.
Caithness coach Colin Sangster is looking forward to the resumption of action and believes his side has a chance to turn the tables tomorrow.
He said: “I’m pretty upbeat and so are the guys. We have a chance to do well against thems though a lot depends on what side they come up with. It will be interesting to see how they perform outwith the comfort zone of their home surroundings.”
The latest postponement came last Saturday when the Greens’ scheduled trek to Kilmarnock was called off.
The weather-enforced postponements have been a particular sickener for scrum-half-cum-centre-cum winger Graham Fryer.
Having returned for a lengthy spell home from his job offshore in mid-December, he had looked forward to playing four competitive fixtures.
He has just returned to his rig having seen the plug being pulled on all four.
The pivot berth poses a problem for the club with regular custodian Kris Hamilton having been called up to the Scottish under-20 squad.
The versatile William Mill is set to claim the number nine jersey. Blair McIntosh has recovered from a hip injury while offshore workers and fellow backs Norman Foubister and James Sinclair are both available.
The match has a 2 p.m. kick-off.
* The only NLD2 fixture to escape the freeze-up went ahead at Fort Matilda where Greenock Wanderers defeated Hawick YM 27-14.
The win stretches Wanderers’ lead at the top to 20 points.
It came in the wake of the Greenock side being named Scottish rugby’s team of the month.
*Kris Hamilton will this weekend know if he is the playing squad for
Scotland’s opening under-20 Six Nations encounter versus France at Inverness’s Tulloch Caledonian stadium on February 6.
He made a good impression after coming off the bench in last weekend’s first warm-up match versus a Scottish club XV at Dunbar.
A cracking break which almost led to a try featured in an assured run-out for the 19-year-old Dounreay apprentice.
The greater experience and physicality of the club side helped them to a 19-0 win.
Hamilton is involved again this weekend when the under-20s venture south of the border to take on Sale Academy.
The playing squad of 22 for the French match will be announced after this.
