STERN TASK AHEAD FOR GREENS  by Iain Grant
Fri 5th Feb 2010
Weather permitting, Millbank will stage Scottish Hydro National Shield action tomorrow with Whitecraigs the visitors.

The Newton Mearns outfit present a stern task for a Caithness side which has been misfiring in recent outings.

National League 1 Whitecraigs have been progressing swiftly up the ranks and are well in the hunt for their third successive promotion.

Their only reverses in 16 outings have been two narrow defeats to leaders Dalziel and they look set to be playing Premiership rugby next term.

In their last trip to Millbank in March, they won 33-0 in a match marred by off-the-ball incidents which led to premature exits for home scrum-halves Graham Frey and Kris Hamilton.

Coach Colin Sangster believes the pressure is very much on the visitors in tomorrow’s first round tie.

“We have got nothing to lose – the pressure is all on them," he said. “It would be nice to put on a really good performance against them and, having played them twice last season, we know what to expect from them.”

The coach is frustrated that the quality he sees in the training paddock has not been translated into recent matches.

Winger Jamie Sinclair has returned offshore though David MaCarthy is back, as is Fryer.

Prop John Foubister has also recovered from an ankle knock and Sinclair Dunnett is also available to further boost the front row options.

The match kicks off at 2 p.m.

Last Saturday’s scheduled trip to play Cambuslang was one of five Scottish Hydro Electric NLD2 matches called off.

The only one to go ahead saw Greenock Wanderers continue their seemingly unstoppable march to the title.

Their 27-14 home win over Newton Stewart stretched their lead at the top to 24 points.
