| KRIS WINS SCOTTISH UNDER-20 RUGBY CAP by iain Grant |
| Fri 5th Feb 2010 |
Caithness rugby star Kris Hamilton will win his first under-20 cap in Scotland’s opening junior Six Nations tie versus France in Inverness tonight (Friday).
The former Wick High pupil was on Wednesday named in the squad of 22 for the match at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
The nineteen-year-old forced his way into the international reckoning last year when he made a scoring debut as a second half replacement in the under-19s’ 53-13 home victory over Italy.
As a member of the Scottish national rugby academy, he follows a programme over and above the twice-a-week training he does with his club.
He is the only Highlander in the squad with the bulk playing for Scottish premier or English clubs.
According to his club and former youth coach Colin Sangster, the recognition is richly deserved.
He said: “In the era of professional rugby, for a club like Caithness to have a player in the national under-20 side set-up is quite remarkable.
“Kris deserves every bit of success he has as ever since he was involved in the minis, he’s been very committed, hard-working individual.
“He’s got to where he is by a combination of talent and sheer hard work.
“I’m delighted to see him in the squad – it’s a reward for what he has put into the game.”
Kris, of Nordwall Park, Reiss is a third year instrument apprentice with DSRL at Dounreay.
The weather has disrupted the under-20s’ preparation for tonight’s match with all but one of their training matches having been scrubbed.
Kris will start on the bench with Leeds Carnegie’s Inverness-born Alex Black the starting scrum-half.
The Caithness youngster will not lack support from the far north with scores of his fellow players and fans planning to travel down for the match.
Following the Six Nations matches, the under-20s will head to Argentina for the junior IRPB world championships.
