CAITHNESS HOPING TO BUILD ON POSITIVE PLAY  by Iain Grant
Fri 12th Feb 2010
Caithness travel to Inverness to play Highland tomorrow in fine fettle despite their cup defeat at Millbank last weekend.

Their battling display in going down 31-11 to a side challenging for promotion in the league above has lifted the spirits after the deflating record 40 point reverse at home to Scottish Hydro Electric National League 2 rivals Lasswade in their previous outing.

Coach Colin Sangster was happy with the spirit and resilience his troops showed in Saturday’s National Shield match.

He said: “I thought they stuck to their task and the final score-line probably flattered them. We have to take Saturday’s performance as a benchmark for us as we go into tomorrow’s match.

“We’ve still got a long way to go but there was a big improvement in attitude on Saturday. They have their dander up and are looking forward to the match with Highland.”

The coach added: “I’ve identified a number of areas of weakness that we have worked on in training this week that are relevant to the way Highland play.”

Prominent among the downsides on Saturday was the high number of missed tackles and the failure to turn spells of pressure into points.

Highland are seeking a double after turning over Caithness 26-20 in Thurso on September.

A win would also allow the city side to leapfrog their north opponents, who sit a point above them.

Sangster said: “They wanted it more and we’ve got to go down their with that attitude.

“They might fancy their chances of beating us again but it’s up to us to build on last Saturday’s performance and put them on the back foot.”

James Sinclair and David McCarthy are back offshore and an ankle injury sustained in a home D.I.Y accident rules out fellow three-quarter Norman Foubister.

But student James Paterson is available, as is Edinburgh-based number eight Andy Sangster.

The NLD2 match has a noon kick-off so the players can watch Scotland’s Six Nations match in Wales.
