GREENS TAKE ON LEAGUE CHAMPS  by Iain Grant
Fri 19th Mar 2010
Both Caithness and Greenock Wanderers are likely to be well below strength when then they line up for tomorrow’s rearranged match at Millbank.

The visitors are playing under protest after unsuccessfully appealing to the SRU to have the fixture rescheduled a second time.

Wanderers have players among a party travelling to Dublin for tomorrow’s final Six Nations match and are unhappy at fielding a weakened side.

Caithness too have several players heading to the international.

As it was not a set league Saturday, Blair McIntosh and Gary Mackay had also made other arrangements while James Sinclair is still offshore.

That will particularly stretch their resources in the back divison and there could be a belated season’s debut for Martin Oswald while Douglas Gunn is also set to be involved.

Coach Colin Sangster said: “Quite a few of our guys are unavailable for one reason or another and it’s going to be a bit of a battle getting a squad together.”

The Greens will be looking to win back some pride following their traumatic 52-7 reverse at Fort Matilda back in October.

The Greenock side have lost just once in their march to the Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division 2 title.

Caithness have slipped to eighth in the league after four defeats on the trot.

They still need two points to put them outwith the reach of second bottom Preston Lodge and absolutely clear of relegation.

Tomorrow’s match kicks off at 1 p.m.

On Saturday, PL’s hopes of beating the drop took a hit when they went down 15-0 away to Waysiders Drumpellier.

In the other match, Hawick YM moved above Caithness as a result of their 34-27 win over bottom side Cambuslang.

* Caithness scrum-half Kris Hamilton will win his fifth Scottish under-20 cap in Athlone tonight in the final junior Six Nations match versus Ireland.

He came off the bench to play the last 15 minutes in Scotland’s 27-6 defeat versus England at Firhill last weekend.

All the points came in the first half and Hamilton contributed to Scotland’s second half revival with one quicksilver break by the replacement scrum-half almost creating a try for skipper Stuart McInally.

Scotland sit fourth in the table after a win, draw and two defeats and will be facing an Irish side bidding to win the championship.
