GREENS PICK UP SEVENS SILVERWARE  by Iain Grant
Fri 30th Apr 2010
Caithness won silverware but were pipped for a crack at the main prize at Banff’s annual rugby seven-a-side tournament on Saturday.

After completing another gruelling National League campaign, the Greens welcomed the variety provided by the abbreviated format.

Not so long ago, April was the sole preserve of sevens with the club annually taking part in events in Elgin, Inverness, Invergordon, Thurso and Kirkwall.

But most of these tourneys have gone by the board with the circuit increasingly squeezed by the demands of the 15-a-side season.

A ten-strong squad showed up well at the Duff House on Saturday with their fortunes destined to hinge on the outcome of their first group tie.

The Greens were 17-0 up versus Robert Gordon University only to let it slip as the students pulled back to prevail 19-17.

It proved vital as the two sides went on to win their next games versus Aberdeenshire, Banff and Huntly, both scoring a mountain of points in the process.

That left Caithness second and bound for the final of plate.

Gordie Macleod, Kris Hamilton (2) and James Paterson (2) scored tries as they comfortably defeated Aberdeen Wanderers 31-0.

RGU, who recently won the Scottish Universities Cup, meanwhile scored a 50-0 victory over Garioch to win the Fife Lodge Trophy.

Caithness, runners-up at Banff last year and victors in 2008, now turn their attention to tomorrow’s Orkney Sevens.

Squad in Banff: Evan Sutherland, Grant Anderson, Mark Anderson, David McCarthy, Kris Hamilton, Liam Brims, Blair McIntosh, James Paterson, Gordie Macleod and Peter Nicolson.
