| CRAIG DUNAIN 13 - CAITHNESS 27 by Iain Grant |
| Tue 15th Nov 2005 |
Caithness Seconds completed a double over Craig Dunain in the return Highland District League match in Inverness on Saturday.
The visitors went on the attack from the outset and spent much of the first quarter in the opposition 22.
A number of interchanges between forwards and backs coming close before a break on the right by second row Donald Macintosh put centre Blair McIntosh into space where he outpaced the defence to score behind the posts.
Caithness went back on the attack with their three- quarters stretching the home defence on either flank before Blair McIntosh made a telling break in midfield to run clear for his second touchdown of the day.
Dougie Gunn converted to extend the lead to 12-0.
Craig were stung into action and their heavy, combative pack rumbled deep into the Caithness 22 to apply serious pressure.
This resulted in some clever work by their stand off creating a gap and a lock forward, on the switch inside, thundering over by the posts for a converted try.
In what was the best period of the game for Craig, they slotted a penalty to reduce their losing margin to 10-12 at the break.
Caithness went on to take a grip of the game which they were not to relinquish.
Superior fitness started to pay dividends for the visitors at the set piece and in open play with Craig finding themselves on the back foot in all areas.
Caithness used a shortened lineout to good effect throughout the match with Ryan Macintosh dominating proceedings on the touch line.
Although there is work to do in this area, Craig had no effective response and from this supply of ball the Caithness three-quarters crossed for a further three tries.
Two were scored by the increasingly impressive James Patterson and one by left wing Brett Morris.
The latter's try -- the last one -- was probably the pick of the bunch, being triggered by stand-off Stewart Johnston popping the ball from the deck to flanker Alistair Findlay, sweeping round.
His short pass found Blair McIntosh in support and quick hands saw Morris crossing.
In the second period, Craig's contribution to the scoring was a solitary penalty for some over-exuberance from Caithness at the breakdown.
The 27-13 win kept up the encouraging start to the campaign for the Seconds for whom improved attendances at training are starting to pay dividends.
It is also noticeable that the younger players are taking responsibility for decision- making on the field.
Once again, the performance was based on sound defence, keeping the much heavier home forwards subdued and three-quarters under pressure.
It was hard work up front but the pack stuck to their task against a bulky if not particularly mobile eight.
Derek Nicolson worked hard on the tackle count while the three quarters have some talented individuals.
Most pleasing is the way they are starting to come together as a unit.
Caithness: J Malcolm (cpt), G. Gunn, J. Patterson, B. McIntosh, B. Morris, S. Johnston, D. Gunn, D. Saunders, D. Buchanan, J. Miller, D Macintosh (M Leonard 60), D. Nicolson, R. Macintosh, A. Findlay, I. Boyd.
