YELLOWS WIN IN ORKNEY  by Iain Grant
Sat 21st Jan 2006
Caithness Seconds scored one of their biggest wins on Orkney soil when a strong team travelled over to play West.

The Yellows scored eight tries to register a 48-0 win at Stromness on January 21 over last year’s Orkney Internal League winners.

Early on, good linking play in the back featured some surging runs from centre Stewart Johnston.

Firsts regulars Richard Mackay and James ‘Pop’ Sinclair, playing at stand-off and winger respectively, also showed up well in the three-quarter line, as did winger Graham Gunn.

Lock Derek Nicolson was good in attack as was Sinclair Dunnett, Matthew Wicks and Ryan Macintosh who all carried the ball forward and made good hard yards.

The scrum was solid until West changed their loose head prop after which the visitors struggled a bit.

The line-out started a bit shaky but through the course of the game got much better with Macintosh pinching opposition ball towards the end.

Caithness capitalised on a strong start and were 24 points to the good within 20 minutes.

West regrouped and came close to scoring several times before conceding another try before the break.

The Yellows were in charge for most of the second half when they ran in a further three tries.

Wicks gave a man-of-the-man display despite being fielded in the unfamiliar position of lock.

He scored two tries with the others going to Gunn (2), Sinclair (2), Brett Morris and Mackay, who also kicked four conversions.

Skipper John Malcolm was happy with how the game panned out.

He said: "We started off the game putting too many players into the breakdown but as the match progressed we stated to read the game better.

"We committed only four or five players to the ruck and people started to clear out the opposition and protect the ball much better.

"It was a good performance all round but a little more concentration is needed at times."

Caithness: R. Murphy, J. Sinclair, B. Morris, G. Gunn, S. Johnston, R. Mackay, S. Borthwick, B. More, S. Dunnett, J. Malcolm (cpt), M. Wicks, D. Nicolson, I. Boyd, R. Macintosh and D. Bain.
