| YELLOWS V STRATHSPEY by Iain Grant |
| Sat 28th Jan 2006 |
Caithness Seconds went down 48-12 on their trip to Kingussie on Saturday to play Strathspey in a Highland District League clash.
The Yellows pack played second fiddle for most of the tussle which left their useful back division on starvation rations and unable to exploit their potent attacking threat.
The home side started the game well and within the first ten minutes were two converted tries ahead.
Caithness were too often guilty of missing the first-up tackle and not properly organising their defensive shield.
The Yellows fought their way back and improved ball retention saw them work their way into the opposition 22.
From a penalty 10 yards from the line, scrum-half James Moodie executed a quick tap-and-go.
With the Strathspey defence at sixes and sevens, Moodie passed to skipper John Malcolm who went over for a try, converted by Graham Gunn.
Instead of sparking the visitors into life, it had the opposite effect and before half-time, strong pressure from Strathspey yielded another two tries.
Caithness performed better after the interval with the increasing penalty count in their favour evidence of their more effective work at the breakdown.
Top performer for the Yellows was centre Blair Macintosh who was very prominent in defence as well as making a series of incisive breaks.
The Yellows struggled in the scrums until a change at second row tightened things up to allow them to compete and control their own ball.
The returns from line-outs also improved and it was from this source that they notched their second try of the day.
A catch and drive from midway in the Strathspey half saw Stewart Borthwick loop Stewart Johnston in the centre to create an overlap.
Dougie Gunn intruded from full-back with the ball shipped out to winger Brett Morris who still had to beat a couple of players to get the score.
Strathspey were a well drilled side who were stuffy in defence and very adept at moving the point of contact and using the wide pitch to promote an expansive, flowing game.
Caithness deserve credit for some gutsy defending with some last-ditch tackling preventing further damage.
Caithness: Caithness: D. Gunn, G. Gunn, B. McIntosh, S. Johnston, B. Morris, S. Borthwick, J. Moodie, J. Miller, B. More, D. Lewis-Saunders, D. Nicolson, M. Leonard, J. Malcolm (cpt), R. Macintosh and D. Bain.
