| CAITHNESS 65 - DUNS 8 by Iain Grant |
| Mon 9th Oct 2006 |
The Greens ended their try drought with a vengeance on Saturday as they ran in nine to register their biggest win of their National League Division 2 campaign.
Their victory keeps them joint second and sets them up nicely for tomorrow’s trip to play unbeaten leaders Falkirk.
Caithness had ended the contest and pocketed a bonus point into the bargain before the interval.
Duns were relegated last year and look a safe bet to continue the slide, having yet to register a point.
Their strength was in their industrious back row who toiled valiantly throughout despite regularly being on the back foot.
The Greens all to easily found holes to breach the first line of defence, with the visitors’ makeshift midfield a particular weak spot.
The tries came at regular intervals, with Graham Fryer and Evan Sutherland each helping themselves to three and George Sutherland, Steven Campbell and Richard Mackay, one apiece.
Michael Henderson added 20 points from seven conversions and two penalties to push his tally from the last three matches to 50.
Duns replied with a try and a penalty.
For many in the crowd, the pick of the Caithness scores were the last three.
The seventh stemmed from a superbly executed three-quarters move which ended with Mackay romping clear.
The next involved seven or eight players combining well-timed passes before and out of contact to put Evan Sutherland over for his third of the afternoon.
The final effort was perhaps the pick of the bunch, with the ball being transferred swiftly from a series of mini-breakdowns to send Fryer over for his hat-trick.
The game was marred by an ugly spat soon after the interval which led to three players - Campbell and two opponents - being given 10 minute time-outs to cool off in the sin-bin.
Caithness coach Colin Sangster was relieved to see his side in try-scoring mode again after having to rely entirely on Henderson’s boot to prevail in their two previous outings.
"They played reasonably well and you can’t complain if your side scores 10 tries," he said.
"We definitely stepped up from the previous two weeks and this gives us a welcome lift for the Falkirk game.
"There were however one or two things we could have done better at certain times in the game."
After watching the video of the game, the coach counted four clear try-scoring opportunities in the first half which went abegging.
After securing the bonus try, he felt his side slackened off in the third quarter though he was happy with their strong finish which harvested a late run of points.
In fairness, Duns were always going to struggle to last the 80 minutes, given the made the marathon haul north from their Borders base with just 15 players.
