| GLASGOW ACCIES 12 - CAITHNESS 0 by Iain Grant |
| Wed 22nd Nov 2006 |
Tries at the outset and the death of Saturday’s tussle in New Anniesland extended the Greens’ barren run in National League Division 2 to five matches.
Their display was a step-up from the previous week’s hammering in Glasgow at the hands of Allan Glen’s.
Despite another makeshift back division, the Greens competed well and were short-changed not to at least have picked up a losing bonus point.
The performance heartened coach Colin Sangster who has been powerless to watch his side plummet from promotion contenders to mid-season also-rans.
"We played a lot better than we have done over the last two or three weeks." he said.
"The line-outs, scrum and the contact situation all went reasonable well and I’d say we shaded possession overall.
"The problem was that we didn’t have nous in the backs to really capitalise."
The Greens hardly had a touch of the ball when they found themselves behind.
A rash pass by schoolboy Sean Duff was seized on by an Accies straggler who romped over under the posts for a converted try.
Sangster admitted that he then feared the worst.
"I thought it would be a real test for them, given what happened the previous week.
"But they came through it well and we went on to create as many, if not more, scoring opportunities than them."
The first half ended with the home defence fully stretched to contain a series of driving mauls, which were successively checked just short of the try-line.
An even second half saw the Greens turn down several penalties well within kicking range as they tried to find a way through.
Several clear overlaps wide out went abegging while Duff was unlucky not to gather what would have been a scoring pass.
Caithness also defended well with the second score near the end coming after lock forward Ewen Boyd had been sin-binned.
A driven line-out before a foray down the narrow side produced a simple score.
The Greens’ setpiece was strengthened by the return of the experienced Boyd and Andy Morris.
The young three-quarter division also fared well, given that it included two regular forwards in Andrew Sangster - filling in for his injured brother Duncan - and Ryan McIntosh.
The coach said: "It was a frustrating day and, with the rub of the green, we could have got a result.
"Glasgow Accies were a decent side and they included a number of Hawks’ players who have played in Premiership One.
"It was a completely different side to the one we faced in Thurso."
That game saw the Greens win 65-18 - one of their biggest NL victories.
Caithness have no game tomorrow, with their next outing a home fixture against the strong-going Howe of Fife a week tomorrow.
With Michael Henderson back training and Duncan Sangster and Graham Fryer, amongst others, due to return, the coach is looking on the fixture as a springboard to return to happier times.
He said: "We have lost five games in a row though you have to remember only one of those has been at home.
"Howe is going to be a huge game for us in terms of the rest of the season, It really is a must-win game.
Caithness - S. Duff, J. Paterson, B. McIntosh, A. Sangster, R. McIntosh, Mackay, K. Hamilton, J. Foubister (cpt), S. Campbell, S. Dunnett, G. Anderson, E. Boyd, G. Sutherland, A. Morris, E. Sutherland. Replacements - T. Sutherland and D. Lewis-Saunders.
Howe and Linlithgow on Saturday both closed the gap on top two, Falkirk and Annan, with bonus point victories in their respective home fixtures.
Howe defeated Allan Glen’s 43-8 while Linlithgow thumped rudderless Duns 71-0.
The matches at Falkirk, Annan and Kilmarnock all fell victims to waterloggged pitches.
The Greens’ sponsored ‘jail-break’ fundraiser scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed.
